Young Widows Advancement Program (YWAP) exists to assists young widows and orphans live long and prosperous lives through psychosocial, socio-legal and socio-economic support. YWAP runs a rescue centre for young widows and orphans in Kayole estate in Nairobi, Kenya. These widows lost their matrimonial homes and property after the death of the husband. Being moderate slum estate, most young widows who lose their matrimonial homes tend to end up in Kayole. The centre is a temporary home for young widows and their children who have lost their homes and property to greedy and selfish in-laws. Most of these widows have HIV. Our Mission is to advance the interest of widows and orphans by promoting the protection of their sexual, property and inheritance rights. Vision is that widows and orphans live long and prosperous lives, inherit family property unconditionally. Why young widows; The death of the husband spells doom for the widow. It threatens her psychological and physical wellbeing. She faces cruel in-laws who have no regard for the welbeing of her and her children, all her property is normally grabbed from her, She is called names and left a destitute. Most often, she is blamed for the deaths in the family and is punished by being chased away from her matrimonial home and all properties grabbed from her by in-laws. The ignorance of widows’ property inheritance rights in many communities in Kenya is perceived as a cultural one. Today it is an economic and a social issue with fatal implications for the widow and her children. No widow or her children should be left destitute when her spouse dies regardless of her age and how he died. |
